Why are some subscript letters missing?+
Unicode only encoded lowered forms for the letters that phonetic notation and mathematics actually use — about half the alphabet, plus every digit. Letters like b, c, d, f and g simply have no subscript character; the generator leaves them full-size rather than faking it.
How do I write CO₂ or H₂O?+
Type it with normal numbers — "CO2" or "H2O" — in the generator above, tap the Subscript result to copy, and the numbers paste back lowered. The formula chips below work the same way for common molecules.
Subscript characters vs. smaller font size — which should I use?+
In Word or Docs, native formatting is better because any letter can be lowered. Unicode subscripts exist so formulas can travel through places with no formatting at all — chat apps, social posts, plain-text files — at the cost of only working for letters Unicode has defined.
Do subscript characters work on Instagram and TikTok?+
Mostly yes — the digits and common vowels render reliably in bios and captions. Coverage varies by app font, so glance at your post after pasting; if a character shows as a box, that platform's font is missing it.
