Discord text formatter

Switch on the styles you want and copy the result. The formatter writes the markdown Discord understands, including headers, subtext and spoilers, and escapes stray symbols so your message arrives exactly as typed.

Each line is formatted separately. Discord messages can be up to 2,000 characters.

Discord colored text generator

Discord can color text inside an ansi code block. Build your line from pieces, give each piece a text color, a background, bold or underline, and copy the finished block. There are eight text colors and eight backgrounds to choose from.

Paste it as a message. The copied text includes the ```ansi fence and invisible color codes, so send it exactly as pasted. Colors show in Discord on desktop and in the browser; the mobile apps may show plain text instead.

Where fancy fonts work on Discord

Every name field on Discord has its own rules. Here is where styled Unicode letters are accepted.

  • Works:

    Messages and replies

Any Unicode style works, and you can mix it with markdown.

  • Works:

    Display name

Up to 32 characters, and Unicode, symbols and emoji are allowed.

  • Works:

    Server nickname

Also up to 32 characters. Some servers use bots that reset unreadable nicknames.

  • Works:

    About me and custom status

Fancy fonts paste in like normal text.

  • Works:

    Server, role and category names

Popular for themed servers. Keep at least one plain word so members can search.

  • Partly works:

    Channel names

Text channels are forced to lowercase with hyphens for spaces. Styled letters usually survive, but test before renaming a busy channel.

  • Doesn't work:

    Username (the @handle)

Only lowercase a–z, numbers, underscores and periods, 2–32 characters. Put your style in the display name instead.

Discord markdown cheat sheet

Prefer to type it yourself? These are the codes Discord turns into formatting. Headers, subtext, quotes and lists only work at the start of a line, with a space after the symbol.

Discord font questions

How do I change my font on Discord?+

Discord has no font setting for messages. Type your text in the generator at the top of this page, tap a style to copy it, and paste it into your display name, server nickname or a message. The letters are special Unicode characters, so the style travels with the text and works without Nitro. Nitro members can also pick a Display Name Style, a built-in font and effect for their name, but other people may not see it everywhere and it can be turned off in accessibility settings.

Why can't I use fancy fonts in my Discord username?+

Usernames (your @handle) only allow lowercase Latin letters a–z, numbers 0–9, underscores and periods, between 2 and 32 characters. Display names and server nicknames accept Unicode, so put the styled version there.

Will other people see my Discord font?+

Yes, on almost every device, because the styled letters are standard Unicode characters. If someone's device lacks a style, they'll see boxes (□). Bold, italic and script styles are the safest choices.

How do I make colored text on Discord?+

Use the colored text builder on this page. It writes an ansi code block with color codes inside. Paste it as a message and Discord on desktop and in the browser shows the colors. The mobile apps may show plain text instead.

Can I combine fancy fonts with Discord bold or italics?+

Yes. Copy a fancy style, paste it into the message formatter, and switch on bold, underline, spoiler or a header. Many Unicode styles are already bold or italic letters, so adding markdown bold to them often makes little visible difference.

Do fancy fonts work with screen readers on Discord?+

Not reliably. Screen readers may read styled letters as math symbols or skip them. If your server has members who use screen readers, keep channel names and important announcements in plain text.
