Bold and italic in a Facebook post

Facebook has no bold or italic button for posts. Write your post here, wrap the words you want styled in stars, and copy it. Everything else stays in Facebook's normal font.

Tip: style a few key words, not the whole post. Styled letters are harder to read, and Facebook search and hashtags only match plain letters.

Where fancy fonts work on Facebook

Styled Unicode letters are text, not formatting, so they go anywhere Facebook takes text, except where its rules or search get in the way.

  • Works:

    Posts, comments and replies

Paste styled text anywhere you type a post or comment, on your profile, in Groups and on Pages.

  • Works:

    Messenger

Chats and group chats show styled letters like any other text.

  • Works:

    Intro (bio)

Your profile Intro takes up to 101 characters, and styled letters count like normal ones.

  • Partly works:

    Marketplace listings

Styled text pastes in, but buyers search with plain letters, so keep the item name plain and style the extras.

  • Doesn't work:

    Hashtags

#𝗧𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗹 is not the same hashtag as #Travel. Styled letters are different characters, so the tag won't link up.

  • Doesn't work:

    Your profile name

Facebook's name standards don't allow symbols, unusual capitalization or characters from several languages, so styled names are rejected.

  • Doesn't work:

    Page names

Page names follow similar rules and name changes are reviewed, so fancy letters are usually turned down.

Tips for styled text on Facebook

  • Use it for emphasis. A bold first line or a few italic words stand out in the feed. A whole post in script is tiring to read.
  • Sans bold matches Facebook best. Facebook shows posts in a plain sans-serif font, so sans bold and sans italic blend in, while serif and script styles look decorative.
  • Keep numbers, links and hashtags plain. Prices, phone numbers and tags in styled digits can't be tapped, searched or copied cleanly.
  • Check it on your phone. Post to yourself or a test group first if the style matters, since a few rare styles can look different between devices.

Facebook font questions

How do I bold text on Facebook?+

Facebook posts have no bold button, so type your post in the formatter on this page and wrap the words you want bold in double stars, like **this**. Copy the result and paste it into Facebook. The bold words are Unicode bold letters, so they stay bold wherever the post is seen.

How do I change the font of a Facebook post?+

You can't change Facebook's own font, but you can paste in text made of styled Unicode letters. Type in the generator at the top of the page, tap a style to copy it, and paste it into your post, comment or Intro.

Will my friends see the fancy font?+

Almost always. The letters are standard Unicode characters that phones and computers have shipped with for years. On a very old device a rare style can show as empty boxes, so bold, italic and cursive are the safest choices.

Can I use fancy fonts in my Facebook name?+

No. Facebook's name rules don't allow symbols, unusual capitalization or mixed character sets in profile names, and styled letters fall under those rules. Use them in your Intro, posts and comments instead.

Do fancy fonts work with screen readers?+

Not well. Screen readers may read styled letters one by one, as math symbols, or skip them. Style a few words for emphasis and keep the important details, like dates, prices and places, in plain text.

Why don't styled words show up in Facebook search?+

Search and hashtags match plain letters. A word written in Unicode bold is made of different characters, so people searching for it won't find your post by that word. Keep keywords and hashtags plain.
