Build a bio that fits

The most readable Instagram bios style one line, usually your name or what you do, and leave the rest plain. Write your bio line by line, pick a style for the first line, and watch the 150-character meter. Switch to Caption to check your hashtags before you post.

Styling just your name or headline keeps the rest of the bio readable and searchable.

Instagram limits that matter for fonts

Checked against each platform's own help pages on Nov 6, 2026. Platforms change their limits, so trust the counter in the app if it disagrees.

Instagram doesn't publish how it counts styled letters or emoji. The bio builder counts characters as you see them and warns you when the stricter code-point count runs over.

Where fancy fonts work on Instagram

  • Works:

    Bio

Styled letters paste into your bio and count toward the 150-character limit like any other character.

  • Works:

    Captions and comments

Style a word or a line for emphasis. Instagram has no bold or italic button, so Unicode letters are the only way.

  • Partly works:

    Name field

The name above your bio often accepts styled letters, but it's what people search for you by, and styled letters don't match a plain search. Keep your real name plain.

  • Partly works:

    Story text

Story text uses Instagram's own story fonts. Pasted styled letters usually show, but they may look different from the font you picked, and some styles fall back to plain shapes.

  • Doesn't work:

    Hashtags

A styled hashtag is a different word to Instagram, so it won't link to the tag page. Instagram also allows up to 5 hashtags per post.

  • Doesn't work:

    Username (@handle)

Usernames take plain letters, numbers, periods and underscores only, so styled letters are refused.

Bio layouts that read well

  • Styled name, plain details. Bold cursive on the first line, then one line each for what you do, where you are and your link.
  • Small caps for a label. A short tag like ꜱʜᴏᴘ ʙᴇʟᴏᴡ looks tidy, and small caps sit close to normal letter height.
  • One style per bio. Mixing cursive, gothic and bubble letters in 150 characters looks busy on a small screen.
  • Short lines beat one long sentence. Three or four short lines are easier to scan on a phone than a single block of text.

Instagram font questions

How do I change the font in my Instagram bio?+

Instagram has no font setting, so you paste in letters that already look styled. Type your text in the generator, tap a style to copy it, then go to Edit profile, tap Bio and paste. The bio builder on this page lets you style just the first line and checks the length for you.

How many characters can an Instagram bio have?+

Instagram's Help Center says a bio can be up to 150 characters (checked Nov 6, 2026). Styled letters count like normal letters, but emoji and the strikethrough and underline styles are built from more than one character, so a bio full of them can hit the limit sooner than it looks.

Why don't my fancy hashtags work?+

Styled letters are different Unicode characters from plain ones, so #𝓈𝓊𝓃𝓈𝑒𝓉 is not the same tag as #sunset and won't appear on the hashtag page. Keep hashtags plain and style the words around them instead.

Can I use fancy fonts in my Instagram username?+

No. Usernames only take plain letters, numbers, periods and underscores. You can use styled letters in your bio and, usually, in the name field, but people search by name, so a styled name is harder to find.

Will everyone see my Instagram font?+

Almost everyone. These are standard Unicode characters that modern phones show without anything extra installed. Very old phones may show a rare style as empty boxes, so cursive and bold are the safest picks.

Are Instagram fonts bad for accessibility?+

They can be. Screen readers may read styled letters one at a time, call them math symbols, or skip them. Style a word or your headline for looks and keep the details that matter, like what you do and where you are, in plain text.
