Why styled letters count double
X weighs characters. Latin letters, punctuation and common symbols count as 1. Emoji, Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters, and all other Unicode count as 2. Bold, italic and script fonts are made of Unicode math letters, so they fall in the 2 group.
| Text | Counts as |

| bold | 4 |
| 𝗯𝗼𝗹𝗱 | 8 |

Subscribers to X's paid tiers can write longer posts. The 280 limit above is the standard one.
Where fancy fonts work on X
- Works:
Posts and replies
Styled letters post fine, but each one counts as 2 of your 280 characters, so a fully styled post holds about half as many letters.
- Works:
Bio
Styled letters work in your bio, up to 160 characters.
- Works:
Display name
Your name (not your @username) can be up to 50 characters and takes styled letters.
- Doesn't work:
Search and hashtags
X search and hashtags match plain letters. A word in Unicode bold won't be found by someone searching for it, and a styled hashtag won't link.
- Doesn't work:
Username (@handle)
Usernames can contain only letters, numbers and underscores, so styled letters are refused.
X (Twitter) font questions
How do I bold text on X (Twitter)?+
X has no bold button for regular posts. Write your post in the formatter on this page, wrap the words you want bold in double stars like **this**, and copy the result. The bold words are Unicode bold letters, so they stay bold when you paste them into X.
Why does styled text use up my characters faster?+
X's developer documentation says most Latin letters count as 1 but other Unicode characters count as 2. Styled fonts are made of Unicode math letters, so 𝗯𝗼𝗹𝗱 counts as 8, not 4. A post written entirely in a styled font holds about 140 letters instead of 280.
Can I use fancy fonts in my X display name?+
Yes. Your display name can be up to 50 characters and accepts styled letters. Your @username can't: it only takes letters, numbers and underscores.
Do styled words show up in X search?+
No. Search matches plain letters, and styled letters are different characters. Keep names, keywords and hashtags plain if you want people to find the post.
Is styled text accessible on X?+
Not very. Screen readers may read each styled letter as a math symbol or skip it, so a styled post can be hard or impossible to follow. Bold a word or two for emphasis and keep the message plain.
Does this count characters exactly like X?+
It follows the rules X publishes: weighted characters, emoji as 2, links as 23 and NFC normalization. X also skips reply @mentions it adds automatically, which this counter can't see, so trust X's own counter if the two disagree.
